Getting out the truth

It can be hard to get out the truth when the right wing is distorting it so much, but for those who may be interested, here is a letter to the editor by a woman who cares about truth, setting the Obama record straight:

This is my attempt to speak out against the lies we've heard this week. If you wish, please share this with others. -- Cheryl

To the Editors:
This week, Governor Sarah Palin and Senator John McCain have accused Senator Barack Obama of failing to enact significant legislation. Why
do these candidates feel compelled to distort Obama's legislative record and leadership? Please let the facts set the record straight.

From 2005-2007, Senator Obama sponsored or co-sponsored 15 bills that became law. These addressed substantive issues related to ethics and transparency in government, national security, foreign policy, public
health, environmental safeguards, and the benefits of members of the armed services, their families, and veterans.

Media Matters reported that the Library of Congress' THOMAS legislative database shows that Obama was the primary sponsor of more than 150 bills and resolutions introduced in Congress.
Of these,
25 addressed energy efficiency and climate change, 41 addressed health care or public health issues,
14 addressed consumer protection or labor practices, 13 addressed the needs of veterans and the armed forces,
12 addressed congressional ethics and ccountability, 11 addressed education,
10 addressed foreign policy,
9 addressed voting practices and elections,
6 addressed Hurricane Katrina relief and recovery,
5 addressed the environment,
4 addressed discrimination, and
4 others addressed homeland security.
These were not pork barrel measures, but meaty legislative efforts intended to address the
security and well-being of our broad American community.

Enough pitbull politics! -- Cheryl Rooke, Denver, CO
