The moral for all of us:  Always question authority when it comes to the health and well being of your own body or the bodies of your loved ones.  Do your own research on symptoms and take care of yourself as best you can, relying on your intuition and knowledge gleaned from your research.  Be completely prepared when you visit your doctor, with a list of questions and suggestions about your own treatment.  It is your body.  Become an advocate for yourself and take responsibility for your own health. Never allow any procedure or treatment without gaining full knowledge of what is involved and what possible problems or side effects could arise from it. As much as humanly possible, always make your decisions from a completely informed position. 

Consider natural alternatives to Big Pharma drugs.  In many cases, homeopathy, acupuncture, herbs, vitamin supplements, osteopathy, chiropractic, etc. can be much safer and more helpful in bringing about relief from symptoms.  Pharmaceutical drugs often cause side effects that are then addressed by allopathic physicians with yet more drug prescriptions, leading a patient into ever-deepening problems--and even more side effects. Pharmaceutical drugs most often mask symptoms, instead of getting to the root cause of them.  Homeopathy goes to the root, and addresses the problem from there, rather than tackling the leaves and branches as does western medicine.

EXCERPT: ATLANTA -- Shocking as it may seem, U.S. government doctors once thought it was fine to experiment on disabled people and prison inmates. Such experiments included giving hepatitis to mental patients in Connecticut, squirting a pandemic flu virus up the noses of prisoners in Maryland, and injecting cancer cells into chronically ill people at a New York hospital.

Much of this horrific history is 40 to 80 years old, but it is the backdrop for a meeting in Washington this week by a presidential bioethics commission. The meeting was triggered by the government's apology last fall for federal doctors infecting prisoners and mental patients in Guatemala with syphilis 65 years ago.
