A must-see video! http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/10/16/george-hw-bush-olbermann_n_324466.html
Ron Suskind's evaluation is right on. Bush 41's reference to Maddow and Olbermann was a throw-away line, designed to mollify the right-wing crazies. Bush's real targets were Beck, Limbaugh, and the other nuts who have usurped the GOP and its message. The Republican Party has been hijacked by a shrunken hardened core, in which confrontational, dangerous words are being thrown around, without thought or factual basis--and have the potential to lead to terrible consequences. Bush 41 and his cronies recognize this and are appalled at what their party has turned into (albeit because of their own sow-to-the-wind-and-reap-the-whirlwind actions in the past). The whirlwind of Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck and their ilk is now threatening to blow them all away.
If I were a member of the Republican party today and looked around to see what kind of "messengers" were surrounding me and purporting to speak for me, I would be horrified to find myself in the midst of enraged escapees from an insane asylum. I think Bush 41 is experiencing that horror, and probably some guilt as well, because he himself set modern-day attack politics into motion years ago--with the help of Roger Ailes and Lee Atwater. With their outrageous lies and non-factual attacks, they brought into our world the-end-justifies-the-means politics--and that has been carried to today's extremes by the Limbaughs, Becks, Coulters, and the like.
