The Idiot Strikes Out Again!

Once again this poor excuse for a president (or a human being) is embarrassing us all...this comes from www.crooksandliars.com

Bush’s G8 Farewell Message: “Goodbye From The World’s Biggest Polluter”

In case you needed to know why America’s image abroad is in the toilet, look no further than ridiculous quotes like this from our Disgrace-in-Chief.

Telegraph:

The American leader, who has been condemned throughout his presidency for failing to tackle climate change, ended a private meeting with the words: “Goodbye from the world’s biggest polluter.”

He then punched the air while grinning widely, as the rest of those present including Gordon Brown and Nicolas Sarkozy looked on in shock.

Whether you’re a Republican or Democrat, liberal or conservative, is there any doubt left that this guy is an utter clown? I meant that rhetorically, of course.

WHAT DENNIS KUCINICH HAS DONE FOR ALL OF US

KUCINICH is our own Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
by David Swanson

Imagine that you've not eaten a decent meal in months, that the hunger is squeezing and burning you from the inside, and that suddenly you find yourself at an 18-course feast of a dinner -- say perhaps at a summit meeting of world leaders discussing food shortages. You sit down at the table, and they bring in giant platters of the most delicious foods, building a rolling mountain chain of delicacies from one end of the table to the other. On Thursday, July 10, 2008, Americans, rich and poor, had this experience. Our national sustenance is found in our Constitution and our Bill of Rights, and it's been many months that we've been deprived of them. In May of 2006, then House Speaker to be Nancy Pelosi had ordered impeachment "off the table." On Thursday, Congressman Dennis Kucinich put it back on, and we suddenly feasted our eyes on our recently lost Fourth Amendment, on our old staple Habeas Corpus, on our sweet Freedom of Speech, and on our bountiful right to be represented and hold our elected officials to the rule of law.

How did this happen? Millions of Americans made clear to Pelosi their demand for impeachment hearings for Cheney and Bush. And one member of Congress took unusual steps to bring impeachment back from exile. First Kucinich introduced 3 articles of impeachment against Cheney. Then he introduced 35 against Bush. And on Thursday he introduced a single article of impeachment against Bush charging him with misleading Congress into a war on Iraq. And in each case, Kucinich introduced his resolution on the floor of the House, forcing the issue into the media and public discourse, and forcing a vote by his colleagues.

Apparently feeling the pressure and reluctant to have Kucinich raise impeachment on a weekly basis, Pelosi told the media that she expected the Judiciary Committee to consider the matter this time, at least in some half-way sort-of-impeachment hearing. Kucinich held a press conference on Thursday at which he said that what he wants is an opportunity to present his proposals to the Judiciary Committee.

Imagine, for the sake of argument, that Kucinich gets what he's asking for or that Pelosi follows through on her statement in one way or another. The public pressure that has been building for over three years will have achieved a victory. The work of Judiciary Committee members led by Robert Wexler lobbying Chairman John Conyers to begin impeachment hearings will have contributed. But the proximate cause of Pelosi's restoration of impeachment to our public table will have been Kucinich's willingness to introduce impeachment resolutions.

What, one has to wonder, would happen if other members of Congress, perhaps beginning with Wexler, were to introduce their own resolutions, with or without cosponsors, with or without forcing votes on the floor of the House. What if each of the dozens of members who have signed onto Kucinich's resolution and Wexler's letter, or to Conyers' own resolution in the last Congress, or who otherwise profess to support impeachment -- what if each of them were to introduce a resolution each week until Pelosi and Conyers granted them, too, a committee hearing? How many such hearings would have to happen before a full-blown impeachment hearing was begun?

Representatives willing to finally adhere to their oaths of office could introduce articles of impeachment on Cheney or Bush or both. They could plagiarize any of Kucinich's 39 articles or borrow any of the hundreds of others posted on impeachment websites and in books on the topic. Or they could write their own. They could also forego introducing actual articles of impeachment and follow the example that helped drive Alberto Gonzales to resignation. This was the full text of the widely supported resolution that chased him out of town:

"RESOLUTION
"Directing the Committee on the Judiciary to investigate whether Alberto R. Gonzales, Attorney General of the United States, should be impeached for high crimes and misdemeanors.

"Resolved, That the Committee on the Judiciary shall investigate fully whether sufficient grounds exist for the House of Representatives to impeach Alberto R. Gonzales, Attorney General of the United States, for high crimes and misdemeanors."

How hard would it be to rewrite that for Dick Cheney and introduce it once a week? With thousands of Americans working endless hours, fasting, risking arrest, and otherwise sacrificing for impeachment, can't a few congress members be troubled to read a few sentences into the Congressional Record?

My favorite resolution, which I've been trying to get someone to introduce for years now, and which Kucinich included as #27 among his 35, would simply charge Cheney and/or Bush with refusing to comply with numerous subpoenas, ordering current and former staffers not to comply, and refusing to enforce contempt citations. Such a resolution is not partisan, controversial, or subject to any concern regarding Congressional complicity in the offenses. The related investigation would take no time or resources because there's nothing to investigate. And this impeachment would give life to other oversight techniques. Congressman Henry Waxman's proposal to get a bill vetoed that would eliminate Karl Rove's position in the future is cute, but impeachment might actually force Rove to talk.

In 1973, nearly 90 Democratic House members introduced separate bills to impeach Nixon. Two-thirds of them were to investigate whether Nixon's deeds deserved impeachment; the other third were actual articles of impeachment. Most of them had no cosponsors. Today there are at least 90 members of Congress who have shown some form of support for impeachment. If they act now, at the very least they will go on record as having wanted to preserve the rule of law. If they will not act now, please ask them exactly what would constitute an offense grave enough to move them to action.

From Truthout: McCain's TEN Campaign Fiascos This Week

If the mainstream media had been paying closer attention, this week could have sunk John McCain's presidential campaign.

In just the last four days, McCain called the most important entitlement program in the U.S. an "absolute disgrace," his top economic adviser described the American people as whiners, McCain released an economic plan that no one thought was serious, he flip flopped on Iraq, joked about the deaths of Iranian citizens, and denied making comments that he clearly made—TWICE. All this before Friday!

Marathon, a touching Video--a must see

Perhaps you have seen this before, but it is worth another go-around and will be preserved in my Inspiration section on this blog.
This will touch your heart strings. What a remarkable Duo!
A son asked his father, "Dad , will you take part in a marathon with me?"
The father, despite having a heart condition, says "Yes." They went on to
complete the marathon together. Father and son went on to join other
marathons, the father always saying "Yes" to his son's request of going
through the race together. One day, the son asked his father, "Dad, let's
join the Ironman together." To which, his father again said "Yes."

For those who don't know, Ironman is the toughest triathlon ever. The race
encompasses three endurance events of a 2.4 mile (3.86 kilometer) ocean
swim, followed by a 112 mile (180.2 kilometer) bike ride, and ending with a
26.2 mile (42.195 kilometer) marathon along the coast of the Big Island of Hawaii.
Father and son went on to complete the race together.

Dark Lord Cheney Strikes Again

Cheney Staff Tried To Censor Climate Change Testimony

By: SilentPatriot @ 6:45 AM - PDT

I don’t think it’s hyperbole to say that Dick Cheney is trying to destroy the world.

HuffPo:

Seeking to play down the effects of global warming, Vice President Dick Cheney’s office pushed to delete from congressional testimony references about the consequences of climate change on public health, a former senior EPA official claimed Tuesday.

The official, Jason K. Burnett, said the White House was concerned that the proposed testimony last October by the head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention might make it tougher to avoid regulating greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere.

In other words, protecting his buddies’ oil interests is more important to him than protecting the public’s health. Thanks, Dick!

Ignored, Scorned, Belittled...and Right

Important article to read.

http://www.smirkingchimp.com/thread/15730

EXCERPT:
Back in 1977 the much maligned President, Jimmy Carter, showed genuine leadership and political courage, two traits almost entirely missing from today's "leaders." Following the Arab oil boycott of 1973, Carter took a cold, hard look at world oil supplies and declared them a national security threat just waiting to happen. He laid out a vision of what must be done, and done quickly to avoid just such a threat to America's robust, but excessive, lifestyle. Carter, as was his wonkish wont, laid out both his vision and his solutions in painstaking detail in a prime-time television address.

It was filled with hard truths and bitter pills, neither of which pampered Americans had (and still have) no use for and conservatives scorn as "defeatism" and "surrender." On a ship of fools it's always "full speed ahead -- and stop with the iceberg business! Yahooooooo."

When I came across this speech yesterday I intended to only quote from it. That was until I began reading it. I simply could not stop. It could have been written yesterday.

Carter was prophetic in nearly every detail. And, like most prophets, his warnings were ignored -- ignored by the American people because it called on them to trim their consumption. And it was ignored by members of Congress because it required them to do something that, while the right thing to do, would have been unpopular. Genuine profiles in cowardice.

If you're one of those "damn the facts, full speed ahead" conservatives who still thinks Carter was wrong then and anyone making similar noises is wrong today, read this and tell me why it's so. But, before you start ragging on me about how all this could have been averted if only we'd drilled more in Alaska and offshore, click the link at the end of Carter's speech and read the pdf file linked on that page. I know conservatives like to live in fact-free, care-free, ignorance-is-bliss environment, but that report contains facts you cannot ignore and still be right.

McCain and His Gang of 300 Economists

Just Making Things Clear (for those who might tend to believe McCain)
By Steve Benen

Last month, when economists, en masse, concluded that John McCain’s idea for a “gas-tax holiday” didn’t make a lick of sense, McCain told a group of voters that economists aren’t to be trusted.

This morning, McCain decided that he actually loves economists.

U.S. Senator John McCain’s presidential campaign today released a statement signed by over 300 professional economists in support of John McCain’s Jobs for America economic plan. The list includes Nobel Prize winners, business economists with experience in the private sector, policy economists with experience in government and academic economists from major universities and state and community colleges.

Considering the fact that McCain’s economic plan is rather ridiculous, I suppose it’s rather impressive that his campaign pulled together over 300 professional economists (I’m going to assume that’s accurate; I didn’t check the credentials of the names) to endorse this nonsense.

But as it turns out, there’s a catch. As Ben Smith reported, “The statement [signed by the economists] leaves out two big chunks of McCain’s economic argument: the gas tax holiday and his promise to balance the budget by the end of his first term — there’s literally nothing in the release that mentions the deficit or national debt.”

In other words, the economists didn’t endorse his economic plan; they endorsed his plan after taking out two of the more transparently stupid centerpiece ideas of the plan.

Doesn’t that tell us quite a bit? The McCain campaign couldn’t even get like-minded economist allies to endorse his economic plan without quietly allowing them to ignore two of the proposals McCain claims to take seriously?

For that matter, here’s another question. For the next four months, how many times will the McCain campaign and his media base argue, “This economic plan must be pretty good if it’s been endorsed by over 300 economists”? If anyone’s willing to set an over/under, bet on the over. Trust me.

"Offensive" sign not allowed at McCain town-hall meeting: WHY?

In 2005, George W. Bush hosted a town-hall meeting in Denver, at which three law-abiding, ticket-holding Americans were removed from a public event because officials didn’t like the bumper sticker on their car. Three years later, John McCain hosted a town-hall meeting in Denver, and a law-abiding American was removed from a public event because officials didn’t like her homemade sign.

The woman who was ticketed for her innocuous sign, Carol Kreck, a 61-year-old librarian, asks a reasonable question: why would a Republican campaign find a “McCain=Bush” sign so offensive?

You gotta' know you're in big trouble when your candidate can't be equated with your president still sitting in the White House. And what's with this removing law-abiding people from public events? This started with the Bush/Cheney thugs -- and is still going on! And they talk about spreading our kind of "democracy" to others! The irony of it all is beyond the beyond!

AUSTRALIAN CLIMATE REPORT LIKE 'DISASTER NOVEL': MINISTER

SYDNEY (AFP) - Heatwaves, less rain and increased drought are the likely prospect for Australia, according to a new report on climate change which the agriculture minister said read like a "disaster novel." The report, by the Bureau of Meteorology and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, found that the world's driest inhabited continent is likely to suffer more extreme temperatures due to climate change.

It said that exceptionally hot years, which once occurred every 20 to 25 years, were more likely to hit every one or two years. And the hotter weather could begin as soon as 2010.

Agriculture Minister Tony Burke said the assessment indicated that the risk of drought would double, as would the area of Australia declared to be in drough
"Parts of these high level projections read more like a disaster novel than a scientific report," he told reporters.
"What's clear is that the cycle of drought is going to be more regular and deeper than ever."

The report is part of a government review of drought policy.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said the report, which found that the area of Australia having an exceptionally hot year could increase from just under five percent to as much as 95 percent, was "very disturbing."

"The analysis shows that the extent and frequency of exceptionally hot years have been increasing rapidly over recent decades and this trend is expected to continue," the report concluded.
Rainfall, which has been falling since the 1950s -- partly due to climate change -- is also likely to decline with southern Australia and the southern island of Tasmania among the worst affected, it said.

A Robot in an Animated Movie Is Showing Us the Way

Wall-E for President

So much for a July Fourth week spent in idyllic celebration of our country’s birthday. This year’s festivities were marked instead by a debate — childish, not constitutional — over who is and isn’t patriotic. The fireworks were sparked by a verbally maladroit retired general, fueled by two increasingly fatuous presidential campaigns, and heated to a boil by a 24/7 news culture that inflates any passing tit for tat into a war of the worlds.

Let oil soar above $140 a barrel. Let layoffs and foreclosures proliferate like California’s fires. Let someone else worry about the stock market’s steepest June drop since the Great Depression. In our political culture, only one question mattered: What was Wesley Clark saying about John McCain and how loudly would every politician and bloviator in the land react?

Unable to take another minute of this din, I did what any sensible person might do and fled to the movies. More specifically, to an animated movie in the middle of a weekday afternoon. What escape could be more complete?

Among its other attributes, this particular G-rated film, “Wall-E,” is a rare economic bright spot. Its enormous box-office gross last weekend swelled a total Hollywood take that was up 20 percent from a year ago. (You know America’s economy is cooked when everyone flocks to the movies.) The “Wall-E” crowds were primed by the track record of its creator, Pixar Animation Studios, and the ecstatic reviews. But if anything, this movie may exceed its audience’s expectations. It did mine.

As it happened, “Wall-E” opened the same summer weekend as the hot-button movie of the 2004 campaign year, Michael Moore’s “Fahrenheit 9/11.” Ah, the good old days. Oil was $38 a barrel, our fatalities in Iraq had not hit 900, and only 57 percent of Americans thought their country was on the wrong track. (Now more than 80 percent do.) “Wall-E,” a fictional film playing to a far larger audience, may touch a more universal chord in this far gloomier time.

Indeed, sitting among rapt children mostly under 12, I felt as if I’d stepped through a looking glass. This movie seemed more realistically in touch with what troubles America this year than either the substance or the players of the political food fight beyond the multiplex’s walls.

While the real-life grown-ups on TV were again rebooting Vietnam, the kids at “Wall-E” were in deep contemplation of a world in peril — and of the future that is theirs to make what they will of it. Compare any 10 minutes of the movie with 10 minutes of any cable-news channel, and you’ll soon be asking: Exactly who are the adults in our country and who are the cartoon characters?

Almost any description of this beautiful film makes it sound juvenile or didactic, and it is neither. So I’ll keep to the minimum. “Wall-E” is a robot-meets-robot love story, as simple (and often as silent) as a Keaton or Chaplin fable, set largely in a smoldering and abandoned Earth, circa 2700, where the only remaining signs of life are a cockroach and a single green sprout.

The robot of the title is a battered mobile trash compactor whose sole knowledge of human civilization and intimacy comes from the avalanche of detritus the former inhabitants left behind — a Rubik’s Cube, an engagement ring and, most strangely, a single stuttering VCR tape of “Hello, Dolly!,” a candied Hollywood musical from 1969. Wall-E keeps rewinding to the song that finds the young lovers pledging their devotion until “time runs out.”

Pixar is not Stanley Kubrick. Though “Wall-E” is laced with visual and musical allusions to “2001: A Space Odyssey,” its vision of apocalypse now is not as dark as Kubrick’s then. The new film speaks to the anxieties of 2008 as specifically as “2001” did to the more explosive tumult of its (election) year, 1968. That’s more than upsetting enough.

Humanity is not dead in “Wall-E,” but it is in peril. The world’s population cruises the heavens ceaselessly on a mammoth luxury spaceship that it boarded in the early 22nd century after the planet became uninhabitable. For government, there is a global corporation called Buy N Large, which keeps the public wired to umpteenth-generation iPods and addicted to a diet of supersized liquefied fast food and instantly obsolete products. The people are too bloated to walk — they float around on motorized Barcaloungers — but they are happy shoppers. A billboard on the moon heralds a Buy N Large outlet mall “coming soon,” not far from that spot where back in the day of “Hello, Dolly!” idealistic Americans once placed a flag.

And yet these rabid consumers, like us, are haunted by what paradise might have been lost. How can they reclaim what matters? How can Earth be recolonized? These questions are rarely spoken in “Wall-E,” but are omnipresent, like half-forgotten dreams. In this movie, a fleeting green memory of the extinct miracle of photosynthesis is as dazzling and elusive as the emerald city of Oz.

One of the great things about art, including popular art, is that it can hit audiences at a profound level beyond words. That includes children. The kids at “Wall-E” were never restless, despite the movie’s often melancholy mood and few belly laughs. They seemed to instinctually understand what “Wall-E” was saying; they didn’t pepper their chaperones with questions along the way. At the end they clapped their small hands. What they applauded was not some banal cartoonish triumph of good over evil but a gentle, if unmistakable, summons to remake the world before time runs out.

You have to wonder what these same kids make of the political show their parents watch on TV at home. The fierce urgency of now that drives “Wall-E” and its yearning for change is absent in both the Barack Obama and McCain campaigns these days.

For me, Mr. Obama showed signs of jumping the shark two weeks back, when he appeared at a podium affixed with his own pompous faux-presidential seal. It could have been a Pixar sight gag. In fact, it is a gag in “Wall-E,” where, in a flashback, we see that the original do-nothing chief executive of Buy N Large (prone to pronouncements like “stay the course”) boasted his own ersatz presidential podium.

For all the hyperventilation on the left about Mr. Obama’s rush to the center — some warranted, some not — what’s more alarming is how small-bore and defensive his campaign has become. Whether he’s reaffirming his long-held belief in faith-based programs or fudging his core convictions about government snooping, he is drifting away from the leadership he promised and into the focus-group-tested calculation patented by Mark Penn in his disastrous campaign for Hillary Clinton. Mr. Obama’s Wednesday address calling for renewed public service is unassailable in principle but inadequate to the daunting size of the serious American crisis at hand. The speech could have been — and has been — delivered by any candidate of either party in any election year since 1960.

What Mr. Obama has going for him during this tailspin is that his opponent seems mortifyingly out-to-lunch. Mr. McCain is a man who aspires to lead the largest economy in the world and yet recently admitted that he doesn’t know how to use a computer, the one modern tool shared by everyone from the post-industrial American work force to Middle Eastern terrorists to Pixar animators. Getting shot down over Vietnam may not be a qualification for president in 2008, but surely a rudimentary facility with a laptop is. What Mr. McCain has going for him is a press corps that often ignores or covers up such embarrassments.

The Republican’s digital ignorance is not a function of his age but of his intellectual inflexibility and his isolation from his country’s reality. To prove the point last week, he took a superfluous, if picturesque, tour of Colombia and Mexico, with occasional timeouts for him and his surrogates to respond like crybabies to General Clark’s supposed slur on his patriotism.

For connoisseurs of McCainian cluelessness, the high point was his Wednesday morning appearance on ABC’s “Good Morning America.” The anchor, Robin Roberts, asked the only important question: Why in heaven’s name was Mr. McCain in Latin America when “the U.S. economy is really at the forefront of voters’ minds”?

“I know Americans are hurting very badly right now,” he explained, channeling the first George Bush’s “Message: I care.” As he spoke, those hurting Americans could feast on the gorgeous flora and fauna of the Cartagena, Colombia, tourist vista serving as his backdrop. “It’s really lovely here,” Mr. McCain said. Since he can’t drop us an e-mail, a video postcard will have to do.

Mr. McCain should be required to see “Wall-E” to learn just how far adrift he is from an America whose economic fears cannot be remedied by his flip-flop embrace of the Bush tax cuts (for the wealthy) and his sham gas-tax holiday (for everyone else). Mr. Obama should see it to be reminded of just how bold his vision of change had been before he settled into a front-runner’s complacency. Americans should see it to appreciate just how much things are out of joint on an Independence Day when a cartoon robot evokes America’s patriotic ideals with more conviction than either of the men who would be president.

GREEN TEA IMPROVES HEART FUNCTION

More evidence for the beneficial effect of green tea on risk factors for
heart disease has emerged in a new study reported in the latest issue of
European Journal of Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation. The
study found that the consumption of green tea rapidly improves the
function of (endothelial) cells lining the circulatory system;
endothelial dysfunction is a key event in the progression of
atherosclerosis.

The study, performed by Dr Nikolaos Alexopoulos and colleagues at the
1st Cardiology Department, Athens Medical School in Greece, was a
randomized trial involving the diameter measurement (dilatation) of the
brachial artery of healthy volunteers on three separate occasions -
after taking green tea, caffeine, and hot water (for a placebo effect).
The measurements were taken at 30, 90 and 120 minutes after consumption.
Dilatation of the brachial artery as a result of increased blood flow
(following a brief period of ischemia of the upper limb) is related to
endothelial function and is known to be an independent predictor of
cardiovascular risk.2

Results showed that endothelium-dependent brachial artery dilatation
increased significantly after drinking green tea, with a peak increase
of 3.9 per cent 30 minutes after consumption. The effect of caffeine
consumption (or hot water) was not significant.

While black tea has been associated with improved short and long-term
endothelial performance, this is the first time that green tea has been
shown to have a short-term beneficial effect on the large arteries.
Another study has already shown that green tea reverses endothelial
dysfunction in smokers.

Green tea, which originates in China but is now consumed throughout the
world, is made with pure leaves, and has undergone little oxidization
during processing. The cardiovascular benefits of all teas - as well as
dark chocolate and red wine - are attributed to the flavonoids they
contain and their antioxidant activity.3 However, says investigator Dr.
Charalambos Vlachopoulos, flavonoids in green tea are probably more
potent antioxidants than in black tea because there has been no
oxidization.

"These findings have important clinical implications," says Dr
Vlachopoulos. "Tea consumption has been associated with reduced
cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in several studies. Green tea is
consumed less in the Western world than black tea, but it could be more
beneficial because of the way it seems to improve endothelial function.
In this same context, recent studies have also shown potent
anticarcinogenic effects of green tea, attributed to its antioxidant
properties."

Important info for all, especially diet coke drinkers

Read the following reports from several doctors, including neurosurgeon Dr. Russell Blaylock:

DIET COKE WITH ASPARTAME AND CARDIAC DEATH

Dr. Betty Martini
27 June 2008

George Carlin was known as a great stand-up comic. Carlin hosted the first broadcast of "Saturday Night Live" in October 1975. He starred as a cabdriver in his own sitcom, "The George Carlin Show" which ran from 1993 to 1995. Carlin had a very bad habit, he was addicted to Diet Coke with aspartame. He suffered several heart attacks, one at Dodger Stadium during a baseball game. He died of heart failure on Sunday, June 22nd.

http://www.salemnews.com/punews/local_story_175234957.html/resources_printstory

In a nutshell, aspartame (NutraSweet/Equal/E951/Canderel, etc.) triggers an irregular heart rhythm, interacts with cardiac medication--virtually all medication, for that matter, because of damage to the mitochondria or life of the cell--damages the cardiac conduction system and causes sudden death. http://www.wnho.net/aspartame_interacts.htm

On 2/5/08 the New York Times published an article on a new study: "Symptoms: Metabolic Syndrome Is Tied to Diet Soda". Wrote Nicholas Bakalar, "Researchers have found a correlation between drinking diet soda and metabolic syndrome - the collection of risk factors for cardiovascular disease"... "This is interesting," said Lyn M. Steffen, an associate professor of Epidemiology at the University of Minnesota and co-author of the paper" .. Further she said, "Why is it happening? Is it some kind of chemical in the diet soda, or something about the behavior of diet soda drinkers?" I called Dr. Steffen and let her know what aspartame does to the heart and sent her this paper by Dr. H. J. Roberts, and others, which explains in detail:

ASPARTAME-INDUCED ARRHYTHMIAS AND SUDDEN DEATH

By H. J. Roberts, M.D., F.A.C.P., F.C.C.P.
(c)2004 by H. J. Roberts, M.D.

A recent extensive review of sudden death in young athletes (1) made no mention of aspartame as a primary cause or suspected contributory factor, especially when demonstrable pathology was absent. This issue has assumed great public health importance because "diet" products containing this chemical are being consumed by over two-thirds of the population - especially weight-conscious persons.

I have repeatedly reported the serious cardiovascular, 'neuropsychiatric, metabolic and other adverse effects of aspartame products. (2-4) Among the first 1200 aspartame reactors in my data base, 193 (16%) had symptomatic arrhythmia's, 85 (7%) atypical chest pain, and 64 (5%) recent or aggravated hypertension.

One hypertensive patient developed complete heart block within hours after consuming his first diet cola.

Another had undergone unsuccessful radio frequency ablations in the heart before awareness of having aspartame disease.

Pheochromocytoma was suspected in several aspartame reactors.

The issue of sudden death related to aspartame and its breakdown products has been raised a number of times, particularly among previously well individuals using such products... including pilots and drivers , (3,4,6) and athletes. I have detailed the release of norepinephrine, epinephrine, dopamine and free methanol by aspartame; a host of pertinent-related pathophysiologic conditions, (e.g., cumulative formaldehyde adducts derived from aspartame in tissue proteins and nucleic aids; excessive insulin release); direct oropharyngeal absorption from gum, "breath fresheners" and other products; and the increasing problem of aspartame addiction. (4-7)

The likelihood of pulmonary hypertension induced by the vasoconstrictive effects of aspartame products also has been considered. (5) It is relevant that unexplained dyspnea was experienced by 110 aspartame reactors, usually with prompt improvement after abstinence. Moreover, primary pulmonary hypertension was found at autopsy in a 27 year old female aspartame reactor.

The lack of familiarity of most physicians and medical examiners with the foregoing considerations can have serious legal consequences. A case in point is that of a young woman (also a Sunday School teacher) who has been sentenced to serve 50 years in a Virginia prison for allegedly poisoning her husband with methyl alcohol. Elevated methanol blood concentrations were found postmortem in this body builder/basketball player who drank ten diet drinks and other aspartame products daily. She remains incarcerated despite affidavits indicating that 10% of aspartame becomes free methyl alcohol after consumption.

The need for clinicians and corporate-neutral investigators to evaluate the contributory role of aspartame in cardiopulmonary disorders and sudden death, and drug interactions with aspartame, is underscored by the frequency of persons dying unexpectedly being categorized as "death due to causes yet to be determined." One interested resident of Orange county (California) found 192 persons listed in this category between July 11 and November 15, 2003 according to the Orange county Register.

You will note that Dr. Roberts wrote this paper because so many young athletes are dropping dead. Some may remember athlete Steve Bechler's death in West Palm Beach. Tim Sullivan said in the San Diego Union Tribune in Feb, 2003, that whether Steve Bechler's passing (23 year old Baltimore Oriole pitcher) should prompt baseball to ban ephedra-based products is a more complicated matter, one that raises questions of civil rights and individual responsibilities, and about the gap between medical opinion and governmental regulations. But while Steve Bechler's death was blamed on ephedra this no doubt was another Diet Coke with aspartame death. At the time of his death, H. J. Roberts, M.D. who also lives in West Palm Beach immediately called the Broward County medical examiner, Dr. Joshua Perper, and asked him how many diet drinks was Bechler drinking. Dr. Perper didn't even know why he asked. The Idaho Observer wrote the story, Aspartame Poisoning Cover for Ephedra. It was finally disclosed Steve Belcher had a weight problem, he would go without eating for a couple of days and then drink diet pop with aspartame all day. He had a family history of heart problems and aspartame destroys the heart. After researching the issue it's obvious that Steve Bechler did not die because he was using ephedra, it was just another aspartame death! Even Dr. Perper could only conclude that ephedrine "probably contributed" to his death but this doctor was not knowledgeable of aspartame's effect on the heart nor did he know that Steve Belcher was using it.

Obviously ephedra could interact with aspartame but then virtually all drugs interact with aspartame. But the FDA used this aspartame death to remove another supplement. Are they going to take all the drugs off the market because they interact with aspartame? Shouldn't they ban aspartame instead? John W. Olney, M.D., was asked by the Ephedra Education Council to review some of the FDA cases. Go to (http://www.ephedrafacts.com/) for the full report. The adverse event reports Dr. Olney examined include those reviewed for FDA by Doctors Ricaute and Stoll. Dr. Olney says out of 28 cases, there is not a single case that the expert reviewers rated as having a highly probable causal association with ingestion of Ephedra. Didn't bother FDA at all, they could cover up another aspartame death and grab another supplement to please Big Pharma.

Dr. H. J. Roberts said in his position paper on aspartame and cardiac symptoms (http://www.dorway.com/) under atypical chest pain: "More than 50 aspartame reactors experienced unexplained pain in the chest. Many others have atypical pain elsewhere in the body. A number underwent stress tests and coronary angioplasty for suspected coronary heart disease' they proved normal in the majority."

Ephedra is off the market and the sudden cardiac deaths of athletes continue to this day, as well as others in the population including children. Russell Blaylock, M.D., wrote this Athlete Alert on the subject:

ATHLETE ALERT:
RENOWNED NEUROSURGEON IDENTIFIES ASPARTAME & MSG IN SUDDEN CARDIAC DEATH

Neurosurgeon Russell Blaylock, M.D. explains the relationship between sudden cardiac death, especially in athletes, and excitotoxic damage produced by food additives and artificial sweeteners.

(PRWEB) April 14, 2005 -- Dr. Russell Blaylock, an author and neurosurgeon, explains the relationship between sudden cardiac death, especially in athletes, and excitotoxic damage caused by food additives and artificial sweeteners. -- By Russell L. Blaylock, M.D.

Over 460,000 people annually die of a disorder called sudden cardiac death, according to CDC statistics. This condition strikes otherwise healthy people who have experienced no obvious symptoms of heart disease prior to their abrupt deaths.

An alarming number young athletes are included in these deaths, in high schools and colleges as well as among professional athletes. While in some of these individuals cardiologists found evidence of coronary disease and scars from earlier silent heart attacks, there is one mechanism that's getting no attention at all: the excitotoxin damage caused by food additives and the artificial sweetener aspartame. This is despite growing evidence that the excitotoxic mechanism plays a major role in cardiac disease.

Previously, it was thought that excitotoxic food additives, such as monosodium glutamate and aspartic acid in aspartame, cause their damage in the cardiovascular centers in the brain stem and/or by over-stimulating sympathetic centers in the hypothalamus of the brain. Both mechanisms have resulted in sudden cardiac death in experimental animals.

A particularly deadly combination occurs in young athletes: Low magnesium intake, high calcium intake, low intake of omega-3 fatty acids and excitotoxins in food additives. Strenuous exercise, especially in extreme heat, depletes the body's magnesium stores, as does consumption of carbonated drinks and taking calcium supplements. Also adrenalin secretion, increased during exercise, intensifies heart muscle irritability and further loss of magnesium as well. When calcium supplements are taken in the face of an existing magnesium deficiency, both magnesium and calcium are driven into the bones, producing a sudden magnesium-depletion crisis.

Low magnesium produces seizures and causes sudden cardiac arrest. In a classic experiment it was found that stressing magnesium-deficient animals resulted in an almost 100% mortality from sudden cardiac arrest. Adding magnesium reduced mortality dramatically. A considerable body of evidence has shown that low omega-3 fat intake significantly increases the risk and severity of cardiac arrhythmias, the main cause of sudden cardiac death.

A number of studies have shown that Americans are significantly deficient in these protective fats. Finally, recent research has shown that the brain is not the only tissue having glutamate receptors. Numerous glutamate receptors have been found both within the heart's electrical conduction system and the heart muscle itself.

When an excess of food-borne excitotoxins, such as MSG, hydrolyzed protein soy protein isolate and concentrate, natural flavoring, sodium caseinate and aspartate from aspartame, are consumed, these glutamate receptors are over-stimulated, producing cardiac arrhythmias. When magnesium stores are low, as we see in athletes, the glutamate receptors are so sensitive that even low levels of these excitotoxins can result in cardiac arrhythmias and death.

This is especially so when combined with the other factors mentioned. Under such condition, free radicals and lipid eroxidation products build up within the muscle cells, leading to the same outcome.

High consumption of aspartame adds an additional cardiac muscle toxin: methanol. A number of studies have shown that consuming aspartame and MSG (and similar excitotoxins) together greatly magnifies the toxicity.

Young people live on junk foods, most of which contain a number of excitotoxic additives. Several studies have shown that the levels consumed by our youth equal those that cause damage in experimental animals. Humans are 5X more sensitive to these toxins than any animal.

The same factors operate in older individuals. Most people over age 50 years are depleted of magnesium, have low omega-3 fat intakes, are under stress and take a number of medications which compromise nutrition, especially magnesium levels. Because seniors are more likely to have coronary artery disease plus other medical conditions, their risk of sudden cardiac death is even higher.

Both athletes and those over age 45 should take magnesium supplements, antioxidants, omega-3 oils, eat more vegetables and avoid foods and artificial sweeteners containing excitotoxins such as aspartame and MSG. This accomplishes a lot more than attempting to rescue a victim with an external defibrillator after the fact.

Dr. Blaylock's web site is http://www.russellblaylockmd.com/. He is author of "Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills" and "Health & Nutrition Secrets to Save Your Life." He can be seen in the movie on aspartame, "Sweet Misery: A Poisoned World." Copies are available from http://www.soundandfury.tv/

In the movie, "Sweet Misery," Diane Fleming is interviewed from prison. Her husband, an aspartame addict, who played basketball several times a week, died and she was charged with his death. Several experts have written affidavits that Charles Fleming died from aspartame. His last drink was three times the amount of creatine which interacted with aspartame.

Note that Dr. Blaylock talks about the growing evidence that the excitotoxic mechanism of aspartame plays a major role in cardiac disease. Myocardial infarctions or heart attacks are notoriously triggered by aspartame, and the CDC investigation on this poison reports cardiac arrest and death.

In the medical text, Aspartame Disease: An Ignored Epidemic by Dr. Roberts, over 1000 pages, there is a chapter on heart and chest problems. http://www.sunsentpress.com/ Dr. Roberts says on page 399: "The question is properly raised, "Could aspartame reactions precipitate or aggravate existing ischemia (coronary) heart disease?" The histories of several reactors suggest a temporal relationship between beginning aspartame consumption and an ensuing heart attack."

Because aspartame interacts with all cardiac medication, a further investigation into his death should be established. What other drugs was George Carlin using?

It hasn't been that long since another Diet Coke user died, Heath Ledger: http://www.mpwhi.com/heath_ledger.htm It was established that he died of polypharmacy. It's possible the most deadly drug he was using was aspartame in Diet Coke.

Dr. Russell Blaylock said in one interview: "You have a million patients in this country with arrhythmias that are life-threatening, and no one's telling them to avoid MSG and [http://aromatherapy4u.wordpress.com/2006/12/26/aspartameant-poison-or-human-food-ingredient] aspartame, yet it's a major source of cardiac irritability."

Even President Bill Clinton uses Diet Coke and ended up in the hospital with cardiac surgery. Dr. Roberts had dinner with him years before and tried to get him to give it up, and gave him copies of some of his books. He obviously was too addicted to give it up.

It's very difficult to get some victims of aspartame disease off the poison. The free methyl alcohol is classified as a narcotic and causes chronic methanol poisoning. This affects the dopamine system of the brain and causes the addiction. In talking with Dr. Bill Deagle, I mentioned many aspartame addicts simply are not rational. He said it's because aspartame effects the frontal lobes and it can be like talking to someone who has had a lobotomy. This gives new meaning to dumbing down the public! The FDA knows all the dangers. Indeed, they had revoked the petition for approval until Donald Rumsfeld got it on the market through political chicanery. They even had tried to indict the manufacturer. Yet today they refuse to serve within the law and even answer a citizens' petition to ban it-- and will not support an amendment on the imminent health hazard. Chest pain is on their FDA list of 92 documented symptoms from 4 types of seizures to coma and death. It appears the FDA is simply Big Pharma's Washington Branch Office.

Natl. Kidney Foundation is now warning of risk from Fluoridated Water

http://www.organicconsumers.org/articles/article_12710.cfm

Kidney Patients Should be Notified of Potential Risk from Fluorides and Fluoridated Drinking Water

  • Foundation quietly moves toward daylight; abandons long heldendorsement position for fluorides and fluoridated water.
National Kidney Foundation, June 3, 2008
    Straight to the Source

Ellijay, GA: A new position paper from the National Kidney Foundation concludes that individuals with chronic kidney disease should be notified of the potential risk from exposure to fluorides. The document acknowledges gaping holes in research concerning kidney impacts from fluorides, lending new ammunition to the growing numbers of cities, health professionals, water agencies, and citizens who question industry and government assertions that water fluoridation has been proven safe. The statement formally cancels NKF's previous position paper on water fluoridation and recommends that kidney patients be notified of the risks via the organization's web site.
