Santorum gives less than 2% of his income to charity

 By Tina Dupuy, www.crooksandliars.com

Who is the Real Christian?  Santorum or Obama?

EXCERPT:  On paper Rick Santorum is not a generous man. He’s the most religious; the staunchest of the moralists; the fastest to the Bible thumpyist; the preachiest of the preachy in this race. He’s the most giant-government-forcing-you-to-be-holy of the small-government-for-corporations-only candidates. Yet according to his tax returns, he gives the least amount to charity of anyone else running. In 2010 Santorum gave 1.75 percent of his nearly million dollars of income. That same year President Obama gave 14.2 percent of his income to charity topping the most giving of the Republican candidates, Mitt Romney. That’s a whopping 12 percent difference with a president who Santorum says doesn’t have an agenda based on the Bible.

Now this would not be notable if Santorum were a godless hedonist who wrote tomes about how well selfishness has served him. But since he’s of the Christian faith and uses God as a personal reference on his resume, well, then it’s quite significant. Especially since the Bible is pretty clear on charity and helping the less fortunate.

But Santorum’s other problem is he seems kind of anti-women. Now when I say “anti-women” I don’t mean he kicks all women in the shins instead of shaking hands, or he’s scared of anything with an extreme waist-to-hip ratio. I mean he’s anti women being anything other than a mother or a soiled dove. “Traditional roles” for women have been either wholesome mom or the proverbial whore: Mother or outcast; Child bearer or streetwalker; Womb proprietor or back alley courtesan. Feminism traditionally has striven for equality regardless of gender. It’s been a cry for women to be able to branch out of the world’s oldest profession into some new ones. And yes, gasp, work outside the home.

Santorum is a religious fanatic Republicans have gone over the edge!

Whoever would have thought the Republican party would come to this? The fanatical right wing has taken it over. The nonsense being spouted by Santorum and second-rate preachers like Franklin Graham will be the ruination of the GOP, and I can't say I'm sorry. I actually know a couple Republicans who take these nutsos seriously. But I suspect most moderate/intelligent Republicans (if there are any left) are aghast at the idiotic rhetoric they hear spewing forth from the cartoon characters running for President in their party. What an embarrassment!

Theology for Dummies

By Charles P. Pierce, Esquire

21 February 12

n case you all missed it in your preparations for today's celebration of Fillmore/Pierce/Buchanan Day today, Rick Santorum spent the weekend roaming the landscape and talking very much like a nut on a great many topics, and have I mentioned recently what a dick this guy is? I am not kidding. The Republican party is about a half-step away from handing its presidential nomination to an out-and-out religious fanatic whose views, as expressed to allegedly evolved primates on the campaign trail, are not dissimilar to those that some people listen to on their short-wave sets in survivalist camps in upper Michigan, or those that other people hear transmitted to them from St. Michael The Archangel through the fillings in their teeth. There were a number of reasons why the people of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania decided six years ago that they no longer wanted to be represented in the U.S. Senate by fetus-fondling Torquemada. Over the past few days, we have seen only a few of them.

Santorum now has attached himself to the most extreme rightist positions on both women's health care and on the various issues of environmental protection. He has aligned himself with the most extreme elements of his party on both those issues. It doesn't matter a damn any more that he has more "blue-collar credibility" than Mitt Romney - so does Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands - and it doesn't matter a damn that he actually makes the right mumble-noises about his plan to revive American manufacturing, which, anyway, if you look at it closely, is more a plan to revive the personal profits of the people who employ American manufacturing workers. He has decided, on issues that by his own admission are at the core of who he is, to make common cause with the most singularly exotic fauna of the political fringe. Let us face facts. If your opinion on the coverage of pre-natal screening within the Affordable Care Act is based on the notion that the president wants pre-natal screening to be used fundamentally as a Trojan Horse for culling disabled children from society, you've strayed pretty far from the pack. And if you start trafficking in the idea that, say, cap-and-trade is an expression of a "theology," phony or otherwise, you've gone zooming into that zany dimension where every word simply means what you want it to mean.

(Also, in opposing the coverage of all pre-natal screening for whatever reason, Santorum is also adopting a position that will save large insurance companies a lot of money. I do not believe this is accidental, either.)

As it happens, for non-bloggy reasons I need not go into here, I've spent the last week or so reading actual theology from actual theologians, going all the way back to Origen and Tertullian on Christian pacifism, and also hanging around with Erasmius, Luther, and Calvin, while they chew over predestination and free will. (Love that old Dion song. "I think I saw him walking over the hill/ With Desiderius, Martin and John.") I know theologians, Rick. I went to school with theologians, Rick. And you, Rick, are not a theologian, nor any great judge of who is and is not acting out of a "theology." And neither, I would point out, is the president of the United States. A difference in opinion on how we best save our battered planet is not a theological dispute. The answers to it are not to be found in Scripture, or in the writings of the Church Fathers, unless you count Glenn Beck, which I don't, and I think I probably could have gotten Clement of Alexandria to agree with me on that one, too. The answers are to be found in how we argue with each other through our politics. That's messy, and nasty, and uncivil, and so can theology be, but what is being argued about is neither sacred nor ineffable. The only reason to frame it that way is to demonstrate what a good theocrat you can be, and to give people a god-haunted reason for not recycling, or for bitching some more about lightbulbs.

This is not something a candidate should do lightly, or because it gives a candidate a leg up on another candidate who might be, you know, the member of a religion that some of your primary target voters think is a cult. Political campaigns are not theological. It is dangerous to make them so. You get people turning fundamentally political arguments into theological disputes, and you're not far from the darker impulses that lead to the bastinado and a very dire St. Bartholomew's Day. That Rick Santorum is willing to do this, like a child giggling with a blowtorch, is reason enough to disqualify him ever from a position of secular power. The rhetoric he has adopted comes from a history charred by fire, and sodden with blood.

GOP Rep: "Married couples should practice abstinence" (!)

By Diane Sweet   http://crooksandliars.com/

State Rep.Lynne Blankenbeker (R-NH) suggested yesterday that married couples who can't afford birth control can use condoms or abstinence, because they're available "over the counter" and they are affordable.

"People with or without insurance have two affordable choices, one being abstinence and the other being condoms, both of which you can get over the counter," she said.

The comments came at the same hearing where state Rep. Jeanine Notter (R-Merrimack) claimed that birth control pills lead to prostate cancer. In an interview with Merrimack Patch, Notter said that she was referring to studies discussing potentially high levels of estrogen in the environment through birth control pills and a connection to prostate cancer.

Blankenbeker was engaged in a dialogue with Sylvia Kennedy, a New Hampshire doctor, who was testifying in support of Obama's plan. Kennedy urged the coverage of birth control and responded to Blankenbeker that condoms are not a foolproof means of contraception, and also suggested that abstinence does not work all the time, a notion Blankenbeker disagreed with.

"Abstinence works 100 percent of the time," she said.

Blankenbeker also asserted that condoms and abstinence offer married couples a wider range of family planning options than oral contraceptives.

"If you decide you want to get pregnant you can refrain from abstinence," she said.

Apparently Republicans need a daily reminder that the year is 2012 A.D., also that "It's the economy, stupid!"

Texas going for Santorum Big Time

http://www.texastribune.org/texas-politics/2012-presidential-election/santorum-leads-republican-field-texas/

I hope Santorum wins the GOP nomination.  Then we could see how many people in this country want to return to the dark ages for women. Birth control and abortion will be out. He will want Planned Parenthood to lose all funding. No doubt he'd like chastity belts to come back in style, at least for Republican girls and women. In a Santorum world, gays will have to be "reeducated" to become straight, and gay rights would go out the window.  Strong, rigid Catholic Santorum will want laws against sex, unless it's for procreation purposes in marriage between a man and a woman.  I wonder how that will go down with Republican men of all ages in America.  Of course, it wouldn't apply to politicians (or some Catholic priests) for whom recreational sex is daily fare.  But for the rest of us -- well, that's a different story.  Santorum thinks the rabbles' appetites of all kinds need to be reined in, and this GOP holier-than-thou idiot is chomping at the bit to do the job.

I wonder how those who support Santorum can twist their minds around his looney ideology re. sex, etc.  Do they actually agree with him???  Personally, I think Santorum is obsessed with sex and fears his own sexual desires, which is why he rants against it all the time.

Good article on treatment of trans-gender kids

Thankfully, transgender issues are becoming more known and more acceptable -- it's time to stop hiding these things.  I have a suspicion that these cases are of kids who have reincarnated into a different sex after many, many lifetimes as the opposite sex.  It could be shocking to find yourself in a totally different body than  you were used to.  This is a good article:  http://vitals.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/02/20/10450683-more-transgender-kids-seeking-help-getting-treatment

EXCERPT:

As for what parents should do if their child starts acting in a gender nonconforming way, Key advises ongoing communication and conversations.

"Ask them, 'Do you just want to wear dresses or do you feel like you're a girl?'" he says. "Sometimes a boy who just wants to wear dresses is just a boy who wants to wear dresses."

When little kids speak up and tell their parents "I have the body of a boy but the heart and mind of a girl," though, parents should take note and decide how they want to handle it, he says.

At the GeMS clinic in Boston, a team of psychiatrists, psychologists, endocrinologists, and pediatricians provide tools to help adolescents navigate the choppy social and psychological waters of gender identity.

"As non-transgender individuals, we take for granted how easy life is when our mind and our body are congruent with each other," says Leibowitz. "Clinicians and pediatricians need to understand what gender nonconformity and gender dysphoria mean for a specific individuals and to know there are options out there that will profoundly improve their quality of life."

But even kids who have emotional support can become extremely distressed when puberty hits and their body begins to change into that of a stranger, says Leibowitz.

CNN Says Nuclear Attack by North Korea Would Not Affect Whitney Houston Coverage

Wolf Blitzer Promises No Interruption

NEW YORK (The Borowitz Report) – As North Korea ramped up its threats to attack South Korea, CNN reassured its viewers that a nuclear war on the Korean Peninsula would have “no effect whatsoever” on its Whitney Houston coverage.

“As viewers, you have come to trust us to deliver the news whenever it happens, wherever it happens, as long as that news is about Whitney Houston,” said Wolf Blitzer, host of the network’s “Situation Room” program.  “We will never do anything to break that trust.”

As Mr. Blitzer spoke, 23 of the Situation Room’s 24 video monitors featured images of Ms. Houston, with the 24th featuring an image of her ex, Bobby Brown.

The news from CNN sent a chill through the senior leadership of North Korea, who announced later today that it might postpone a nuclear war until later in the week when the Whitney Houston coverage calms down.

“Good luck with that,” Mr. Blitzer said.  “The Oscars are this Sunday.”

Meanwhile, in what some political insiders are calling a sign of desperation, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney today had his first name legally changed to “Not.”

And a new study showed that the election of former Sen. Rick Santorum would solve the U.S.’s immigration problems but create enormous ones for Canada.

Bravo! BRAVO!  Cenk Uygur is speaking TRUTH!  Iran does NOT have nuclear weapons.  They are not a threat to the U.S.!  The major media and the rulers of our world who own them are trying to pull the same wool over our eyes as they did when Cheney/Bush attacked Iraq!   I hope more people will listen to Cenk than they do to Erin Burnett on CNN or the other shills who are spouting war threats all over the major media.

Please watch this video and learn the truth so we don't have to endure a replay of the Iraq debacle.  Send this video on to your friends and ask them to forward it on.  The truth is IMPORTANT, but not enough Americans are hearing it.  7 out of 10 people in America believe Iran has nuclear weapons.  THEY DO NOT!!!!

Maher's comments are very perceptive.  As he says, "Hmmm...I wonder what's different about this President from all the others" in that conservatives seem to think it's fine to be abusive to Obama right to his face, treating him like a servant rather than with the deference due the President of the United States.   Yeah....hmmm....I wonder.....

A good movie to rent from Netflix: The Reflecting Pool re. 9/11 facts

I watched this film, The Reflecting Pool, yesterday on Netflix streaming video (you can get it from Netflix on DVD disk also)  It gets all 5-star reviews from reviewers on amazon.  The mainstream (NY Times, etc.) dismisses it (of course) -- but curious intelligent people won't want to pass this one by.  Its entire content is based on factual evidence and interviews with 9/11 survivors, including on-the-scene firemen and credentialed structural engineers, that completely contradicts what we have been told by the government and controlled mainstream media. Highly recommended for those who prefer truth over lies.

Review from Amazon.com:  http://www.amazon.com/Reflecting-Pool-Jarek-Kupsc/dp/B00177AEGA
The Reflecting Pool is the first investigative drama to address 9/11 in the spirit of such films as All the President's Men and JFK. It follows an investigation by a skeptical Russian-American journalist who teams up with the father of a 9/11 victim to fact check the official version of the tragedy as documented in the 9/11 Commission Report. The results of their investigation suggest the official version as presented in the Report purposely ignored or omitted vital evidence and testimonies to protect people in political positions, including the present administration. 'Whether you see yourself as a truth seeker, patriotic American, independent thinker or voter, or just someone with bad memories of 9/11, you should make an effort to view The Reflecting Pool, a new independent movie. It is not about 9/11. It is about the credibility of the official government story about 9/11. Though a drama, it is based on meticulously researched facts about 9/11 as revealed in the bonus material on the DVD.' (Joel S. Hirschhorn) This film is an intense, sobering analysis of the most controversial tragedy of our time. Drawn from established sources and based on verifiable facts, The Reflecting Pool is a thought-provoking study of a search for truth and the profound consequences of not looking for it any further than the nightly news.

Two viewer reviews from amazon.com:

5.0 out of 5 stars A Film All Americans Should Be Required To Watch!, April 9, 2008
The Reflecting Pool (DVD)
I must recommend this film to any American who still thinks that we live in a democracy or that this is the land of the free and the home of the brave. Just how far down the rabbit hole you go after watching this important film is up to you... but it is a trip you must make...and soon.
Thank you to the filmmakers for risking it all to bring people these painful questions about a day that has been used to justify the murder of far too many people and the loss of trillions of dollars. Thank you.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must- See Film, April 10, 2008
The Reflecting Pool (DVD)
Gripping, taut, provocative, well-acted and exhaustively researched. Like all the best dramas, this film raises questions and doesn't wrap it all up with a neat little bow at the end. As the protagonists delve deeper into the events of 911, the viewer is carried in deeper as well. It's edge of your seat stuff and all the more horrific because the events depicted are true.
This film should be required viewing for anyone and everyone living in these uncertain times.

...here's what Republicans don't get, or won't tell you. And what Obama manifestly does get. First, the war's already lost: 98 percent of Catholic women of child-bearing age have used contraceptives. (DUH!) Second, on many major issues, the bishops are on Obama's side - not least on extending unemployment benefits, which they call "a moral obligation." Truth to tell, on economic issues, the bishops are often to the left of some leading Democrats, even if both sides are loathe to admit it. Furthermore - and shhh, don't repeat this, even if the president already has - the Catholic Church funded Obama's first community organizing, back in Chicago.

Ready for a Santorum Presidency?

Think you've heard everything by way of right-wing insanity?  Unfortunately, not by a long shot -- read the following article and weep for the comic-strip world we now inhabit. As if we women haven't had enough patriarchal authoritarianism over our lives, a President Santorum would impose dark-age, mysogynistic ideology upon us once again and wipe out any gains we have made over the centuries:

TOP SANTORUM DONOR'S BIRTH CONTROL METHOD FOR WOMEN: PUT AN ASPIRIN BETWEEN YOUR KNEES

By Stephen Webster

In a startling outburst Thursday, the multimillionaire who’s given most to a super PAC supporting former Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA) for president remarked that universal contraception coverage for women shouldn’t be needed because, “Back in my day, they used Bayer aspirin for contraceptives.”

“The gals put it between their knees and it wasn’t that costly,” he told MSNBC host Andrea Mitchell.

The comment comes by way of Foster Friess, the 71-year-old multi-millionaire former investment manager who’s become the largest donor to the Red, White and Blue fund, which supports the Pennsylvania Republican.

The saying is an old adage that has, at least in one case, promoted the type of sexual ignorance that ruins lives. A “Dear Abby” column in 2007 addressed the very same saying by recounting the tale of a 15-year-old girl whose father told her to put an aspirin “between her knees” to avoid pregnancy. The girl’s mother wrote that she ended up pregnant after having sex at age 15, mostly because that phrase was the extent of her sexual education.

Santorum, who’s avidly anti-abortion and anti-contraception, has previously said that if he were elected president, he would ensure that criminal charges are filed against doctors who carry out abortions. He’s also called for an end to hormonal birth control, which would apply to virtually all of the most common forms of female contraception, including “the pill.”

Friess has explained he thinks Santorum would be the best candidate for Republicans because he has the least amount of political baggage out of the other leading candidates.

All private health insurance policies will be required to provide contraceptive coverage later this year as part of the Affordable Care Act’s mandate for free preventative care. Religious organizations will be exempt from paying any part of this coverage if they object, the Obama administration said last week.

The insanity of Republicans on birth control -- Dems walk out of autocratic hearing!

I cannot imagine any intelligent person on this planet is backing the GOP's insane rejection of insurance coverage for birth control for women.  The Catholic religion's implacable stand on this issue has led to millions of church members leaving that organization.  Polls have shown that more than 90% of remaining Catholics don't obey the church on this matter. And now we have the GOP, in their hatred of Obama, fighting against Obama's wise compromise contraception rule.

Darryl Issa's authoritarian rulership on this committee, in not allowing a progressive woman to speak in favor of birth control insurance coverage for WOMEN  is totally unacceptable.  The right wing has gone too far in their demands of obeisance to their ridiculous medieval ideologies.  It's not hard to predict that a HUGE backlash is heading their way!  Read the article below and (if you're a Republican), try to twist your mind enough to accept this right-wing bubble action.  Democrats can just continue to shake their heads -- and contact their Congressional representatives to protest the craziness....once again. (sigh)  We are now living in a cartoon world. It can't possibly be real!

HOUSE DEMOCRATS WALK OUT OF ONE-SIDED HEARING ON CONTRACEPTION, CALLING IT 'AN AUTOCRATIC REGIME'
By Laura Bassett and Amanda Terkel

WASHINGTON -- Three Democrats walked out of a House Oversight and Government Reform hearing on religious liberty and the birth control rule on Thursday to protest Chairman Darrell Issa's (R-Calif.) refusal to allow a progressive woman to testify in favor of the Obama administration's contraception rule. The morning panel at the hearing consisted exclusively of men from conservative religious organizations.

"What I want to know is, where are the women?" Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) asked Issa before walking out of the hearing after the first panel. "I look at this panel, and I don't see one single individual representing the tens of millions of women across the country who want and need insurance coverage for basic preventative health care services, including family planning. Where are the women?"

Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.), told reporters in the hallway outside the hearing that she marched out because it was being conducted like an "autocratic regime." The other members who left were Maloney and Rep. Mike Quigley (D-Ill.).

There are 10 witnesses testifying at Thursday's hearing. None of those individuals -- listed as testifying prior to hearing -- are in favor of the Obama administration's birth control rule, and few are women.

Barry Lynn, executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, was listed as a witness for the hearing, but Simon Brown, a spokesman for Americans United, told The Huffington Post that Lynn will not be testifying. (He will, however, be submitting written testimony to the committee.)

Democrats say they tried to invite another witness -- a young woman -- to testify, but were blocked by Republicans.

Issa said at the hearing that he rejected the Democrats' female witness, Sandra Fluke, because, as a Georgetown University law student who "appears to have become energized over this issue," she was "not appropriate or qualified." He said that in lieu of allowing her to speak at the hearing, he instructed his staff to post a video online of Fluke speaking at a previous press conference.

Ranking Member Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) complained about the matter in a letter to Issa on Wednesday.

"When my staff inquired about requesting minority witnesses for this hearing, we were informed that you would allow only one," Cummings wrote. "Based on your decision, we requested as our minority witness a third-year Georgetown University Law Center student named Sandra Fluke. I believed it was critical to have at least one woman at the witness table who could discuss the repercussions that denying coverage for contraceptives has on women across this country."

In his letter, Cummings wrote that Issa's staff told Democrats that the chair had decided, “As the hearing is not about reproductive rights and contraception but instead about the Administration's actions as they relate to freedom of religion and conscience, he believes that Ms. Fluke is not an appropriate witness."

Fluke has been a vocal supporter of the Obama administration's decision not to exempt religiously-affiliated employers from having to offer contraception, without a co-pay, to their employees under their health insurance. The White House recently rolled out a compromise, where insurance companies would have to pick up the cost of the contraception if an organization determined the requirement violated its religious sensibilities.

After walking out of the hearing Thursday, Holmes Norton pulled Fluke into the hallway to allow her to speak to reporters. Fluke began to cry as she told the story of her 32-year-old friend who was diagnosed with ovarian cysts and prescribed birth control pills as the only remedy for her condition that could save her from becoming infertile. Because her student insurance did not cover contraception, Fluke's friend could not afford her medication, and she eventually lost her ovary and began experiencing symptoms of early menopause.

"Those are the consequences of this policy, and those are the voices the chairman silenced today," Fluke said.

Cummings stated in his Wednesday letter that Issa had violated Committee rules in regards to the witnesses at the hearing.

"Instead of inviting Ms. Fluke to testify, your staff informed us that you planned to invite a different witness who was no longer available [Lynn] after being informed of your decision to limit the minority to a single witness," Cummings added. "Compounding this insult, this afternoon you added two more witnesses of your own, in violation of Committee rules requiring three days notice for witnesses called by the majority."

Becca Watkins, Issa's press secretary, disputed Cummings' charges in a statement to The Huffington Post on Wednesday evening.

"After days of asking the minority for a witness suggestion, at 1:04 pm today the minority requested that two witnesses be invited," she wrote in an email. "Only three hours later, at 4:18 pm the majority staff informed the minority staff that the Chairman was extending an invite to one of the witnesses the minority had requested -- it has long been a common practice at the committee for the minority to recommend a single witness. After the Chairman agreed to issue an invitation, the minority then objected saying the witness they had requested just three hours earlier was no longer their request."

"As part of his efforts to obstruct the committee's oversight, Mr. Cummings continues to press the idea that he is entitled to special treatment that Democrats did not afford to Republicans when they were in the majority," she added. "Mr. Cummings' whining is a distortion of the reality that the majority quickly approved and issued an invitation to a witness selected by the minority."

The issue of witnesses at committee hearings has been a sore subject between Issa and Cummings for some time. For instance, all administration officials who testify before the committee are considered minority witnesses, even if the Democratic members didn't invite them and don't agree with their position. Issa and Democrats have also argued over when staff members are allowed to accompany members on trips.

Andy Borowitz: No One Likes Romney--this could be hurting him (~.~)

February 8, 2012

Fact That No One Likes Him May Be Hurting Romney

Could Foil Bid to Become First Openly Assholic President

DENVER (The Borowitz Report) – Exit polls from Colorado and Minnesota Republican contests reveal that former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney’s key obstacle to gaining the GOP nomination is the fact that voters cannot stand him.

According to Davis Logsdon, who conducted the polls for the University of Minnesota’s Opinion Research Institute, “Despite his superb organization, funding, and ground game, Mitt Romney is having trouble overcoming the perception among voters that he is a ginormous dick.”

Mr. Logsdon said that these obstacles “could prove fatal to his historic bid to become the nation’s first openly assholic President.”

Exit polls taken last night bear out that theory, with a majority of voters agreeing with the statement, “I think Mitt Romney is so odious, I would rather vote for a random doofus I’ve never heard of who goes around in sweater vests.”

The beneficiary of that sentiment last night was former Sen. Rick Santorum, who told supporters at a victory rally in Missouri, "I support the rights of the unborn child until it's born and wants a gay marriage."

Speaking to supporters in Denver, Mr. Romney uttered what some political experts are calling a possible gaffe: “I don’t care about all the people who didn’t vote for me.  They just envy my massive wealth.  And poor people?  They can curl up die, and I won’t lose a wink of sleep.  I bet you a million crisp dollars from my vault in Geneva."

The Dangerous Rick Santorum

Rick Santorum's Nightmarish America

by Lawrence Davidson

EXCERPT:
T
he number of Americans who respond positively to Rick Santorum’s message is probably in the range of 20 percent. In terms of the Republican Party, they probably represent about one-third of the membership. Being ideologically driven, these people are motivated to vote. And, that is significant in a nation where voting turnout is traditionally low.

So, Rick Santorum is certainly representative of a politically active part of the U.S. population – a dangerous, intolerant, noisy, in-your-face part. If we let him and his followers get their way, the result will be ever greater divisiveness and decline at home, and war abroad. That is a choice for the rest of us.

Our Democracy Has Been Thrown Overboard by Bill Moyers

Republican voters don't see this -- which is a terrible pity, because we are all sinking together.  It doesn't much matter anymore whether you vote Republican or Democrat --both sides are bought and paid for.  The rich men who set out to own this country and the world have accomplished their task, corporation by corporation, investment by investment, war by war, lobbyist by lobbyist, vote fraud by vote fraud.  The deed is done. Power and greed have won. We are in the death throes of what we call "democracy" and are utterly unable to keep a government of the people, for the people, by the people. Now we will have to live in an oligarchy where the rich call the shots and we, the people must obey -- or else.   Bill Moyers' excellent article tells the full story:

Money Throws Democracy Overboard
by Bill Moyers

EXCERPT:

When all is said and done, this race for the White House may cost more than two billion dollars. What’s getting trampled into dust are the voices of people who aren't rich, not to mention what's left of our democracy. As Democratic pollster Peter Hart told The New Yorker magazine’s Jane Mayer, “It’s become a situation where the contest is how much you can destroy the system, rather than how much you can make it work. It makes no difference if you have a ‘D’ or an ‘R’ after your name. There’s no sense that this is about democracy, and after the election you have to work together, and knit the country together.”

These gargantuan super PAC contributions are not an end in themselves. They are the means to gain control of government – and the nation state -- for a reason. The French writer and economist Frederic Bastiat said it plainly: "When plunder becomes a way of life for a group of men living in society, they create for themselves, in the course of time, a legal system that authorizes it and a moral code that glorifies it." That’s what the super PACs are bidding on. For the rest of us, the ship may already have sailed.
