Bob Herbert gives sensible, practical advice in this column! I hope Obama takes it -- and runs with it! Damn the conservative naysayers -- we can't wait for them to catch up to the 21st century. Their "No, No, NO's" are holding us back--and killing us in the process. Look at the damage that has been done to our country by this type of thinking -- by the Reagans, Bushes, Cheneys and Palins of our era. They have brought this country to its knees with their deregulation of corporations and banks. It's astounding that Republican right-wingers can still support the policies that have led us to disaster. It's as if they are deaf, dumb, and blind to the consequences of their votes. They vote against their own interests! (Read the book What's the Matter with Kansas?) Instead of looking at where the insanity of the Cheney/Bush years have brought us, many of the racists among them would rather concentrate their outrage against an African-American president, just for the color of his skin. Since we cannot raise the consciousness of these people, by our votes we will have to make sure they don't get any more of their backwards candidates into political leadership positions.
